What is Bokashi?
Bokashi meaning “fermentation” is an anaerobic food digestion process that literally pickles the waste with inoculated bran over a period of 14 days without being disturbed. The leachate produced as a by-product has to be drained from the bin every few days.
Can I add Bokashi Residue into the HOTBIN?
When removed from the system this waste is pickled and 'pre-composted' therefore adding this to the HOTBIN will provide no nutritional value to the bacteria and subsequently very little heat will be produced as it's broken down further.
Another concern about adding any waste that has gone through this process concerns its structure of a "bran like" substance. We do not recommend adding any bran into the HOTBIN as this can absorb the moisture within the bin causing swelling and eventually restricting airflow in the HOTBIN.
If you currently have a Bokashi system and are looking to purchase a HOTBIN, the HOTBIN will compost any waste you currently add to that Bokashi system and more so both systems would not be required.
